These are some of our favourite local independent restaurants that we recommend you try whilst you’re in the area. You’ll also find many familiar chains locally too.

A word of warning, the best places in the area aren’t very big and are very popular – especially Fridays, Saturdays and School Holidays – so we strongly recommend that you book in advance if there’s somewhere you definitely want to visit. Most places in the area only open for lunch on a Sunday – so check the opening hours in the listing.

Walking distance

Mango House

It was a really pleasant surprise moving to a small village and finding such a high quality Indian restaurant a 3 minute walk away. We send lots of our guests to Mango House because its one of our favourite places to eat in the area. Great food, nice laid-back atmosphere, friendly service and excellent prices.

There are two takeaways in the village. Sammys is a Fish and Chip shop that also does Chinese food and Evergreen serves Chinese food but also does Fish & Chips 🙂

Further Away (but worth the trip)

Red Lion Inn – Penderyn

The Red Lion is a beautiful old stone country pub set on the hillside above the village of Penderyn. The food here is some of the best in the area with a skilful kitchen that use high quality, locally sourced ingredients. Definitely worth combining a visit here with the Penderyn Whisky Distillery tour or after doing the Four Waterfalls walk nearby.

Open for lunch & dinner Wednesday to Sunday, Closed Monday and Tuesday. Call 01685 811914 or see their Facebook page for more info.

Chang Thai – Brecon

Before opening The Grange we spent a couple of months in Thailand so we know good Thai food when we see it. Chang Thai is probably the best that we’ve found in the UK since we returned and that’s all we need to say on the matter!

Open every day for eat in & takeaway from 5-11pm – 01874 622 330

If you’ve visited us before we’ll have almost certainly recommended both JOL’s and Woodfired in the centre of Merthyr but unfortunately neither made it through the carnage that COVID caused in the hospitality industry. We’ve heard that there are plans for new ventures on both sites now things are starting to open back up again.

Takeaways and Deliveries

Delivery services such as Just Eat & Deliveroo also operate locally and we’re always happy for guests to order food in or bring take-aways back to The Grange – we’ll even provide the plates and cutlery. We politely request that you eat in the communal areas and not in your rooms.
